How to Naturally Remove Smoke Odors From Clothing

Normally I love anything scented: incense, scented oil, the works. But there is one thing I avoid - Febreeze!

I know a lot of people love it and I certainly used to. Until one day I took a glimpse at the warning label. Not very reassuring. It basically says right on it that it's extremely hazardous to you, your family, and your pets. How is that even legal?? But darn it, it works! *Pouts*.

So how DO you get nasty smells out of clothing safely and naturally?

Well I stumbled upon an answer one day after buying some used clothing off ebay. This "smoke-free" seller never mentioned the fact she had stored the box of clothes at Granny Marlboro's house for several months.   I didn't want to return it because it was such a good deal, but I also didn't want to keep it - not smelling like that.

So I searched the Internet for some way to remove smoke smells from clothing. I tried everything, even a site for helping people salvage their clothes from burned down houses. Even those tips didn't work! It was starting to look hopeless. That half-used bottle of Febreeze on my laundry room shelf was calling my name.

Then I thought of something. Baking soda is an odor-eliminator, right? It sure keeps those strong onion smells from haunting the fridge. But no, it was way too easy. It wouldn't work, would it? Well, no harm trying.

It worked!! With a little less than 1/4 cup in the washing machine, it took that smoke smell COMPLETELY out in one wash. I was so happy, I was like beauty queen happy where you enthusiastically hug people you don't like. I think I even did a little dance. It totally worked, and it didn't damage the clothes!

Who knew something so easy would be the solution? It's funny how we've abandoned simple things for more complicated (and expensive) ones. Baking soda is so cheap and almost everyone has it in their house already, but we don't realize it's potential. It's also great for absorbing grease stains, putting out grease fires, easing indigestion, scrubbing tubs and stove tops (without scratching!) and deodorizing just about everything!

Someone even published a book called 100 uses for baking soda or something like that. It is definitely on my "to read" list.
